My first diet began at 10 years old...

Yep, you read that right. Little me had big ideas about what a body should look like, and it was a far cry from what I saw in the mirror. In my family, conversations about weight loss were as common as discussing the weather. Emotional eating was the norm, and dieting was the price you paid.
Using food for comfort was my earliest blueprint for self-soothing -- and boy, did I need a lot of soothing! Raised by a single mother, I was a latchkey kid growing up in the eighties who spent A LOT of time alone. Food was my babysitter, companion, and friend. It was an emotional lifeline.
But, as the noise of diet culture settled in and my body expanded, the soft haven of after-school snacks was replaced by prickly thoughts of skipping meals, calorie-counting, and an overwhelming sense of not-enoughness.

And that was only the beginning. I was a reluctant passenger on the Shame Spiral Express for over two decades! The relentless cycle of overeating and restricting was dizzying. Why couldn't I get this part of my life to make sense? What was wrong with me? I just wanted it to stop.Â

In 2010, I discovered intuitive eating. At first, I was very skeptical...

Could there possibly be another way to live and eat that didn't involve me numbing, abusing, judging, restricting, or policing myself with food? I was so damaged and doubtful but, I wanted to heal this part of myself -- DESPERATELY.
It didn’t happen overnight, but the gradual unraveling of a lifetime of conditioning allowed me to shed the harmful layers of emotional eating, diet culture, weight obsession, and negative self-talk. Slowly, I started to rebuild my relationship with food, my body, and myself.
Of course it wasn't that simple. I had my share of setbacks and over time, I realized that insight and intuition weren't enough. I needed actionable tools to manage real-time binge urges and overeating temptations too. I looked high and low, but when I couldn't find the exact strategies I needed, I decided to create them.

Finally! I felt normal around food and comfortable in my body. I let go of perfection and reclaimed my freedom.
